September will be the 10th Anniversary of our new Library Building. To help celebrate we will have all kinds of special activities and prizes on Saturday of Thomas Mitchell Days from noon to 5 pm. For fun, each week until then we will have some special facts and information about the library in the city e-mail, on our Facebook page, and on our web page.
Did you know the first Public Library in Polk County was in Des Moines in 1866, West Des Moines was next in 1934. In 1951, Mitchellville was the third city in Polk County to have a library. Ankeny was 1960, Urbandale, 1961, and Altoona 1971.
Libraries are Transforming because Access equals Opportunity!
Mitchellville’s first library opened October 20, 1951 and was located on the second floor of the old fire station. It shared the second floor with the City Council and the American Legion.
Libraries are Transforming because Learning to Read comes before Reading to Learn.
By 1958 residents were asking for a library on the ground level, the stairs were difficult to climb, especially for older patrons and mothers with children. Dr. and Mrs. DeFrance donated the land between the Bank and Dr. DeFrance’s Dentist Office. Dr. David T. Nicoll donated money for the building. The Library measured 20 feet by 22 feet and opened November 1958.

By 1974, extra space was desperately needed for the Library. In 1976, the City bought the land next to the library that had been Dr. DeFrance’s Dentist Office and then Bea’s Beauty Shop. The Library Board, Staff, and patrons raised $30,000 for the addition that opened in January 1979.

The Library continued to grow and needed more space. In late 2004 the Library Board was offered the empty former grocery store for its new home. With lots of work by the Library Foundation, the citizens of Mitchellville, and grants, the Mitchellville Public Library opened its new building September 2007.
